Hello – Last weekend felt more like “more winter” than spring, but I sincerely believe we have turned the corner. I mean, next week is May. Get outside and enjoy it! We have activities here almost every night, so stop by to support our students.
My main reason for writing today is to inform you about the board’s decisions concerning the future of the Johnson Creek School District. Last week the board finalized cutting $500,000 from the annual budget. This was not easy and was on top of the over $200,000 worth of cuts that were made before this year. The final staff count will be down by 10 total people from the 2022-2023 school year when I started.
The list of cuts crosses every area of our operations, so everyone will have to do more next year. The following is the list of personnel cuts approved by the School Board.
Maintenance – Cutting one position
AG – Cutting the teacher and the program
Elementary Special Education Teacher
MS Math Teacher
2 Paraprofessional positions
Math Interventionist
The School Board will be meeting in the next couple of months with regard to a possible November referendum. As we told you during the process, we cannot cut our way out of this financial situation. We were encouraged by how close the vote was and will take that into consideration with our new plans. I can guarantee you that the School Board will continue to keep students front and center in all of their decisions. As we traveled the community and attended school events, we found a lot of passionate support for our schools and we are very proud of that fact.
I will continue to host “lunch with the superintendent” and I have reserved Wednesday, May 15 from 11:30 – 12:30 in the District Office Conference Room. It is very simple – bring your lunch in and join me to discuss whatever topic you choose, such as budgeting, scheduling, staffing, or even politics. I would appreciate it if you called to let me know you were coming, so we can plan for the appropriate space. I am also willing to come to you. Please give me a call and let me know where and when, and I will try to make it work.

The Johnson Creek School District operating referendum failed by 28 votes this past week. This was a very close margin. The School Board will reflect on this message and go back to the drawing board with regard to moving our district forward. We will continue to keep students front and center in all of our recommendations and decisions. We know there is a tremendous amount of support in our community for our schools and we are very grateful for that. We are also asking for the conversations to continue on a professional level as we navigate this budget deficit. As we said before, we cannot cut our way out of this situation.
I do want to thank everyone that helped us get referendum information out to the public. We are proud of our efforts and proud of our availability.
I will continue to host lunch with the superintendent and I have reserved Wednesday, May 1 from 11:30 –12:30 for a “SALAD with the superintendent” in the District Office conference room. JC Robotics at Xavier VEXFest 2024
On Saturday, February 17th, our middle school robotics team (JC Robotics) went to St. Francis Xavier High School in Appleton to compete against 16 other middle school teams in the club’s first-ever VEX tournament. The team has worked all school year to develop a robot that plays a game called Over Under. In the game they can earn points scoring “triballs'' in a goal, moving the triballs around the game field and even lifting their robots off of the ground at the end of the match.
The team ended up in 6th place after qualifying which ended up earning them the right to create the 4th seeded alliance in the knockout rounds. They lost in the quarterfinals to an alliance that pushed the 1st seeded Alliance in the semi-finals as the 1st seeded went on to win in the finals vs. the 2nd seed. For their first VEX competition ever, it can be said that they performed well while learning a lot about how to improve! For their efforts, they did get invited to the State Tournament in Green Bay to compete, however, they made the decision to focus on another competition coming up in May. They’ll check out this year’s State competition with having their sights set on next year!

One of the most challenging tasks any school faces is how to properly monitor what goes on within its walls and the sprawling, modular structure in Johnson Creek housing the elementary, middle, and high schools is no exception. It does, however, have a feature or two that make the job a little easier. Digital security cameras are spaced throughout the hallways and domes. The distinctive shape and layout of the school allows teachers to see a panoramic perspective of their respective domes- just by stepping outside their classroom doors.
Up until very recently, the same could not be said about the parking lots and other nearby locations on school grounds once you ventured onto the grounds outside the building. There was not an outdoor camera to be seen anywhere in the parking lot, and there were few spots in the parking lot that were easy to see by staff.
“There was certainly a need,” JCHS Principal Dr. Neil O’Connell enthusiastically remarked. “In the last few years we’ve had accidents, unidentified vehicles that would park overnight for days at a time, and even the theft of a teacher’s catalytic converter in broad daylight. There are also all of the normal concerns that come with trying to keep a contemporary school safe and secure in the present day as well as the more timeless shenanigans that students have been known to engage in.”
“We knew what the solution was,” Dr. O’Connell explained, “but our issue was that outdoor surveillance equipment doesn’t come cheap.”
The district struggled to find a workable financial solution to the $30,000 price tag for outdoor cameras until Helenville resident and longtime supporter/donor Dale Weis became aware of the issue.
“My daughter brought the issue to my attention after that teacher’s exhaust was taken,” said Weis. His daughter, Jennifer Budig, High School and Middle School Administrative Assistant, was very familiar with the problems associated with not having any cameras covering the parking lot. “The lack of cameras seemed like a problem that needed to be solved”, Weis explained, “and I was lucky enough to be in a position to help fix it.”
District Superintendent Mark Gruen leveled jubilant praise at Weis’s actions. “Amazing. Just an amazing act. He finds out that there is a problem or need at the school and the next thing you know he is reaching out to us to see what he can do to help. Just amazing.”
Weis’s generous donation allowed the district to purchase a surveillance system that includes twenty-seven cameras and is compatible with the school’s existing surveillance software. It allows staff to monitor the entrances and exits, as well as parking lots and other locations in the immediate vicinity of the school, all in crisp, high-definition.
The installation was completed earlier this Spring before the beginning of summer break. It wouldn't take long for the cameras to prove their value. “We had an accident in the parking lot early in the school year,” Dr. O’Connell remarked. “We were able to share footage with the JC Police Department that helped them to determine what happened. I’m already losing count of how many times we’ve used the new cameras to help settle a student dispute or assist with a disciplinary issue.”

The Johnson Creek School Board recently recognized Doosan Bobcat for its support of the district’s schools.
Matthew Waech, Site Operations Manager, accepted the certificate, and said, “Bobcat has been highly committed to engaging with the local community, and one of the core values of our business is social responsibility. A significant aspect of this value involves our active participation in and support of the local communities in our vicinity. The team in Johnson Creek is deeply passionate about giving back to the community, particularly in support of our students. Investing in the future generation through educational opportunities is one of the most impactful ways we contribute to the well-being of the community. We eagerly anticipate expanding and deepening this partnership beyond what we have accomplished thus far.”
Doosan Bobcat increased their involvement in the district this past year in both time and treasure. They spent time with the Middle School Robotics Club team and awarded a STEM grant. They also donated steel to the welding labs so they could practice welding, along with four used welding machines, four barrels for the class to make smokers out of, a tool chest for the STEM program, and two raffle baskets. They also picked up scrap metal to scrap for the lab and paid for an inflatable obstacle course for the post-prom event.

The victory was even sweeter in front of the home crowd. Senior Tyler Skogman was strong from the gun, running a season best time, and smashing his own course record by one minute and 48 seconds, crossing the line in first place.

Coach Brett Perucco offered in reflection, “I’m very proud of how our team finished at our home meet. It was a tough course and warmer than expected, but our boys pulled off their first-ever first-place finish, which is really exciting. Our girls ended up placing second overall. This just shows how all of their hard work is paying off. I’m especially proud of Xanthe for having her best race ever, even after dealing with some leg pain earlier in the week. It’s going to be exciting to see what these kids can do for the rest of the season!”
