JCES Students Attend Music Listening Festival

The Music Listening Project is a general music project of the Wisconsin Music Educators Association.  Johnson Creek has been participating in this project since its beginning in 1984.  All 5th grade students have been studying 6 designated pieces of music along with music from the Caribbean in music classes.  They are asked to recognize a piece and instruments by hearing, and know the composers, styles and forms for each piece; a "music bee" of sorts.  At the regional and state level, they are also asked to apply their knowledge to pieces of music that they did not study and present a creative interpretation of one of the songs, which involves higher level thinking skills of evaluation, analysis and application.  Our 5th grade team earned a I* rating at the Lake Geneva regional, which sent them to the state level.  At State, held at Waunakee High School, they danced to "Put on a Happy Face" which you can see in the video, and answered 52 out of 59 answers correctly, earning a II rating, the highest in their section of State.

Southern Lakes Anthology Winners

Each year, the Whitewater Talented and Gifted Network sponsors The Southern Lakes Anthology project.    It is an enrichment activity involving the creation of poetry, prose, Art and cartoons generated by a common theme. This year’s theme was “Make a Mark”.  The following students will be honored for their work this year at a reception at UW-Whitewater on May 22. : 3rd graders  Jacob Constable (Art),  Izzy Doherty(Art),  Melanie Hernandez(Art),  Evan Krueger(Poem) , Noah Loos(Art),  Denalyn Siewert(Poem),  fourth graders Maddy Garvey (Art) and Kenadie LaSage (Poem) and 5th graders  Hannah Constable(Poem) and Justin Swanson(Poem).  All Artwork will be shown on the large screen in the Young Auditorium, there will be a musical performance and then each grade level will have one poem read.  Kenadie LaSage has written a poem titled, “Construction is Coming”.  She has been awarded the highest honor for a 4th grade poet, beating out hundreds of others from 30 different schools,  by being asked to read her poem aloud at the start of the Awards ceremony.

Students Pamper Moms

On the Friday before Mother’s Day, kindergarten and first grade students at the Johnson Creek Elementary were ready to pamper their moms. First grade students have been working for weeks writing poems, stories and practicing songs about their special moms.  The kindergarten students had also been getting ready with their annual much anticipated “Spa Day” for their moms. The kindergarten rooms are turned into high end spas and students treated their moms to massages, pedicures, manicures, facials and hair and makeup makeovers.
