Johnson Creek High School Earns College Board AP® Computer Science Female Diversity Award
Recognized for Closing the Gender Gap in AP Computer Science Principles
Johnson Creek High School has earned the College Board AP® Computer Science Female Diversity Award for achieving high female representation in AP Computer Science Principles. Schools honored with the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award have expanded girls’ access in AP Computer Science courses.
Out of the 20,000 institutions that offer AP courses, 1,119 achieved either 50% or higher female representation in one of the two AP computer science courses or a percentage of the female computer science examinees meeting or exceeding that of the school’s female population during the 2019-2020 school year. That’s nearly 37% more than the 818 schools recognized last year. In 2020, Johnson Creek was one of 831 recognized in the category of AP Computer Science Principles.
“Johnson Creek’s students need the power to shape technology, not just cope with it,” says Stefanie Sanford, College Board chief of global policy and external relations. “Young women deserve an equal opportunity to become the next generation of entrepreneurs, engineers and tech leaders. Closing the gap in computer science education empowers young women to build the future they want.”
The first year of AP Computer Science Principles in 2016-17 attracted more students than any other AP course debut, and participation is on the rise. In 2020, more than 116,000 students took the AP CSP Exam—more than double the number of exam takers in the course’s first year, and a 21% increase over the previous year. In 2020, 39,570 women took the AP CSP exam, nearly three times the number who tested in 2017.
Providing female students with access to computer science courses is critical to ensuring gender parity in the industry’s high-paying jobs and to drive innovation, creativity, and representation. The median annual wage for computer and information technology occupations was $88,240 in May 2019. However, a code.org analysis of 2017 Bureau of Labor Statistics data finds women represent just 24% of the 5 million people in computing occupations.
That’s why new College Board research about AP CSP is so encouraging. According to the data, female students who take AP CSP in high school are more than 5 times as likely to major in computer science in college, compared to similar female students who did not take CSP. The study also finds AP CSP students are nearly twice as likely to enroll in AP CSA, and that for most students, AP CSP serves as a stepping-stone to other advanced AP STEM coursework.
These findings make it all the more imperative that schools nationwide achieve gender parity in AP Computer Science classrooms. The 1,119 schools that receive this year’s AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award should serve as inspirations and models for all American high schools, where overall, female students remain under-represented in computer science classes, comprising just 34% of AP Computer Science Principles participants. So there is a long way to go to achieve equal gender representation in the field of computer science. Currently, less than half of the nation’s high schools teach foundational computer science, a clear opportunity to be addressed by strong partnerships between policymakers, the tech industry, and educators.
4th Grade Virtual Tour of Kitchen
Yesterday the 4th graders took a virtual tour of the kitchen in the MS/HS dome with Kassidy Wright. They learned that her job includes planning the nutritious meals, sending in reports, and cooking - which is her favorite part of her job. The best part of her job is seeing the smiling kids' faces when they try new food and like it! They also learned that her favorite foods are popsicles and ice cream! Thank you for all you do for our students!
4th Grade Virtually Meets Author
Today, the 4th grade class had an amazing opportunity to virtually meet the real-life 'Wonder,' Nathaniel Newman. Nathaniel was born with Treacher Collins Syndrome, which is a craniofacial abnormality. Mrs. Toebe read the book Normal to her reading class which inspired her to reach out to the Newman family. After hearing their incredible story, students learned to celebrate their differences and to accept all people. Thank you to Nathaniel for teaching us to celebrate our own 'Normal.'
Students Receive CPR Certification
Students in Mr. Ramsier's Medical Occupations class spent this morning getting CPR certified.
Hour of Code
Computers are everywhere, changing every industry on the planet, but fewer than half of all schools teach computer science. Young women and students from marginalized racial and ethnic groups are severely underrepresented in computer science classes, and in the tech industry. Good news is, we’re on our way to change this.
With the Hour of Code, computer science has been on homepages of Google, MSN, Yahoo!, and Disney. Over 100 partners have joined together to support this movement. Every Apple Store in the world has hosted an Hour of Code. Even President Obama wrote his first line of code as part of the campaign.
That’s why students at Johnson Creek Elementary joined in on the largest learning events in history: The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week.
The Hour of Code, organized by the nonprofit Code.org and over 100 others, is a global movement that believes the students of today are ready to learn critical skills for 21st-century success.

Veteran's Day Video
The elementary students created a video to honor all who have served, and are currently serving our country. Thank you for your bravery and sacrifice. We are grateful for you today and every day. Happy Veterans Day!
In honor of the presidential election, students in 4k held a "Presidential Pet Election". Students learned about the voting process by voting on what pet they thought would be the best pet for the president - cat or dog. The students had to register to vote, mark their ballots, and place them in the ballot dropbox. When all the votes were in, they counted the votes.

Reading Is A Passport To Countless Adventures
Please Enjoy Your New Book. Our goal is to encourage and engage students to become lifelong readers.
Fifth through eighth grade students in Mr. Petersen's Engineering class this term just presented their Maker Faire projects this week. Students work through the Engineering Design Process on projects of their choosing and then share it with their classmates. Working in teams of up to four students, or by themselves, they align their projects with themes including science related topics and even food or seasonal celebrations. Students develop their problem solving skills and typically need to learn new ones to get the job done. Check out this video on Mr. Petersen's channel to see all of the cool things they made! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3Ylb4dAdbU
